I just received, what I consider, one of the scariest callings in the church: Gospel Doctrine Teacher. I feel so inadequate for this position. There are many others in our ward that know so much more than I do that I wonder why I was the one asked to do this assignment.
This Sunday was my first class to teach and I was glad to still be breathing by the end. However, one good thing that has come out of this responsibility is that I found time to read and study the scriptures and other talks during the week.
I think that I will frequently share my favorite quotes from the lessons here. This week we talked about keeping the sabbath day holy. Brother Roy Doxey, an assistant to the president, said the following in 1964, that I believe is still relevant and caused me to wonder how I was doing with my children:
"How will the world know the Lord's people today? One way is by observance of the day of rest. The testimony of the truth comes to the obedient. A witness of the gospel must be based upon the faith of the individual. Every parent should ask, 'Is my attitude toward Sabbath observance reflected in the faith of my children?' In other words, if the parents break the law, will the children feel that they may disregard the Lord's commandment? Observance of the Sabbath day by the parents brings forth fruits of faith in the lives of the children and the testimony of truth through keeping the other commandments."
This quote helped me realize how important it is to do appropriate activities on Sunday in hopes that my children will value the Sabbath day and develop testimonies of Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ.
