We carved our pumpkins that we got at the Pumpkin Patch. We cleaned both of the pumpkins out and carved the big one. We put candles in both, watched them burn and then put the lids on. Breven kept saying that his candle had "no fire." We talked about what was different with the pumpkins and tried to figure out why. We then carved the little pumpkin and asked the same questions. They realized that the pumpkins needed holes to keep the candles burning. The next day when they told their dad about carving pumpkins, Sienna said, "We did science dad and learned that fire needs air to keep going." Dad added, "Wow! Fire needs oxygen, fuel and an ignition." We didn't get to all that. I guess we have the next part of our lesson. 
(Check out the nose on the little pumpkin. That was very important that he had a "BIG" nose).

How fun! We haven't carved pumpkins yet. Jaydan got to pick one on his field trip to the pumpkin patch, and he has managed to poke holes all over in it. We're planning on going to a pumpkin patch tomorrow as a family to choose a pumpkin for Joshua. Then let the carving begin! (I actually dislike carving, so I wouldn't mind if we skipped it this year! :)
